Passive solar water heating systems operate without pumps  and controls and can be more reliable, more durable, easier to maintain, longer lasting, and less expensive to operate than active systems.  

Passive systems relying on convection or thermo-siphoning to circulate water are usually less expensive than active systems, but are also generally less efficient due to slower water flow rates through the system. The hot water storage tank must be located above the absorber tubes/panel. 

A disadvantage of this design is the aesthetics of having a large tank on the roof or within the attic and possibly even the structural integrity of the roof.  The logistics of mounting a tank above the collector may also preclude this type of system from being adopted.
